This year’s championships aren’t open entry. Every team and every individual all-arounder had to qualify first, mostly through continental championships held earlier in the year. There are a handful of additional individual berths decided through the FIG World Cup series on specific apparatus rather than an all-around result.
Betting interest builds ahead of Worlds
In a gymnastics event like this, online sports betting usually comes down to two central markets – which country takes team gold, and which individual gymnast wins the all-around title. Apparatus finals draw thinner betting markets by comparison, since pricing a single 30-second vault pass is a harder job for oddsmakers than pricing a full multi-event competition with a deeper field.
Prop-style bets on individual scores are starting to show up on some books, too. These follow the same pattern that took hold in gymnastics-adjacent sports like figure skating years earlier.
Where and when
Rotterdam Ahoy will host the event from October 17 through October 25. This will be the third time the venue has held these championships. The first one was held in 1987 and the second in 2010.
That history gives the venue a track record most hosts for this event don’t have, having already run the same competition format twice before, with local organizers familiar enough with the layout to skip a lot of the trial-and-error a brand-new host city usually deals with.
The schedule day by day
Men’s qualification opens the event on October 17 across two subdivisions, followed by women’s qualification split across October 18 and 19 in three subdivisions of its own. The men’s team final runs October 20, with the women’s team final the following night.
Individual all-around finals follow. Men on October 22, women on October 23. Then apparatus finals close out the event across the final two days, October 24 and 25. This includes the men’s floor, pommel horse, and rings on the first day. That’s with women’s vault and uneven bars, then men’s vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar on the last day, alongside women’s balance beam and floor.
Team USA’s path to Rotterdam
Team USA qualified for both the men’s and women’s team competitions through the Pan American Championships. On the men’s side, only the region’s top four teams were able to advance. That’s a tighter cutoff than the women’s side, where the top five made it through.
Full rosters typically firm up closer to the event itself, once domestic qualifying trials wrap up, with a team alternate named alongside the competing lineup in case of a late injury before the first routine.
Athletes worth watching
Sports are about showing real fitness, but when it’s elite gymnastics, things get even more demanding. A routine that looks effortless on screen is usually the product of a training load. Most other sports don’t come close to matching the concentration required in a routine that lasts under two minutes on the floor. Or think of the closer to thirty seconds on an apparatus like vault, where an entire year of training compresses into a single pass down the runway. One mistimed step and the whole routine is over before the judges even finish raising their paddles.
A market still finding its footing
Betting markets around events like this sit inside a much larger picture. Broader growth in the casino market has pulled sports betting along with it in states that legalized both around the same time. A global event like Worlds gives sportsbooks a reason to build out gymnastics-specific markets they might otherwise skip. They can easily test demand two years ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics, when interest in the sport typically spikes hardest of any four-year cycle.
